About Ambulatory Medical Care

At Woodlands Health, we understand that a lengthy hospital stay is not a desirable outcome for patients, especially those with less severe conditions. In fact, it is widely known that patients who can recover at home tend to recover better and faster in the comforts of home.

After receiving care at the Emergency Department, some patients may be directed to certain services such as Ambulatory Medical Care (AMC). The AMC service allows clinical teams to quickly diagnose, treat and discharge suitable patients, reducing the need for admission to a general ward. Not only does this avoid unnecessary admissions, it can also help patients and caregivers reduce costs associated with an inpatient stay.

What is Ambulatory Medical Care?

The AMC service provides suitable patients with rapid medical care, with the goal of discharging them within one to two days.

Suitable patients may include those with the following conditions:
  • Anaemia

  • Jaundice

  • Constipation

  • Fluid overload

  • Electrolyte imbalance

What can you expect as an Ambulatory Medical Care patient?

Here are some things you may expect as an AMC patient:

  1. Be reviewed by a dedicated senior doctor

  2. Receive care as part of a smaller group of patients

  3. Be sent for further tests and investigations to better understand your condition

  4. Be prescribed medications for your condition

  5. Be discharged from AMC within 1 - 2 days

If a longer stay is needed, you may be transferred to a general ward.

After discharge, you may be asked to return for a follow-up appointment with a Specialist for further treatment or review. Our Specialist Clinics are located at the Medical Centre.

Where is Ambulatory Medical Care located?

AMC is located at Tower B, Basement 1. It is co-located with the Extended Diagnostic Treatment Unit (EDTU), which is within our Emergency Department.

AMC provides care in a shared space with other patients. For the comfort of all patients, please follow our ward visiting policy.
