"Whether it is improving patients' understanding of their medication, resolving drug-related issues through careful review, or empowering patients to take charge of their medication management, these moments drive me."
- Joan Chua, Senior Pharmacist at Woodlands Health
How long have you been in your role?
I have been with Woodlands Health since early 2019.
Can you summarise what your job entails in a sentence or two?
I review, prepare, and dispense medication orders to ensure safe and effective therapy. I’m also part of the Patient Education pharmacy team, developing materials to enhance patients' understanding, and I work with the Continuing and Integrated Care (CIC) team to support patients receiving care at home.
What led you to choose a career in healthcare?
I have always been interested in healthcare. It could have stemmed from watching medical dramas, which sparked my curiosity in learning about various medical conditions and treatments. Additionally, witnessing my family members requiring medical treatment likely also influenced my decision to pursue a healthcare-related profession. It prompted me to think about how I could contribute to their well-being and support them in their recovery.
What keeps you motivated at work?
Seeing the positive impact on patient care keeps me motivated. Whether it's improving patients' understanding of their medication, resolving drug-related issues through careful review, or empowering patients to take charge of their medication management, these moments drive me.
What aspect of your job do you think is often misunderstood?
One aspect that’s often misunderstood is the diverse roles a pharmacist can take on. Beyond dispensing medication, we run pharmacist-led clinics, participate in events to improve patient understanding, and play an active role in enhancing the overall healthcare system.
Could you share a memorable moment from your time in healthcare?
A memorable moment was during the months leading up to the campus opening. It was a challenging time, but we adapted swiftly to unexpected changes and supported one another to ensure a smooth transition. The teamwork and resilience really stood out.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to interact with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals while making a positive impact, no matter how big or small.
Why did you decide to join us?
I joined because working in a new hospital presented opportunities that pushed me out of my comfort zone, both professionally and personally. It allowed me to collaborate with colleagues from various departments and contribute to the planning of new initiatives.
What made you stay with us after?
I stayed because I truly enjoy the work I do, and the opportunities for growth keep me engaged. The supportive and positive environment created by my colleagues has also made a big difference.
