"What I find most fulfilling is seeing patients regain their confidence in communication with hearing aids —
it's rewarding to know my work truly makes a difference."
- Teo Siok Chin, Senior Audiologist at Woodlands Health

How long have you been in your role?
I’ve been working as an audiologist for 3 years.
Can you summarise your job in one or two sentences?
Audiologists assess and manage hearing, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and balance disorders. We also play a key role in advocating for safe listening habits and hearing protection.
What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
I've always been passionate about helping others, and I believe everyone deserves quality care. I wanted to make a positive impact on people's health and well-being, which inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare.
What keeps you motivated at work?
What motivates me the most is seeing how my patients persevere and strive to improve their hearing. This also incudes observing their transition from being reluctant to wear hearing aids to accepting them as they notice how these devices improve their ability to communicate and connect with the world. It brings me great satisfaction to witness these changes and know that I played a part in improving their quality of life.
Is there an aspect of your job that you feel is often misunderstood?
Many people think audiologists handle only hearing tests and hearing aids, but our role extends much further. We also help patients with balance disorders, tinnitus, and other ear-related issues, and play a key part in preventing noise-induced hearing loss by promoting safe listening habits and hearing protection.
Could you share a memorable moment from your time in healthcare?
During a routine hearing aid follow-up, a patient mentioned that one of the hearing aids sounded softer. Upon further inquiry, the patient reported mild pain behind the ear. This prompted me to conduct a quick assessment, which raised my suspicion of an ear infection. Consequently, I referred the patient to an ENT specialist, who confirmed the diagnosis. This experience is memorable because it allowed me to apply my skills to ensure the patient received timely care, making a real difference in her health.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most as an audiologist is helping people from all walks of life achieve the same goal - hear and communicate better. Noticing how patients regain their confidence, and seeing how my work makes a positive difference in their lives is such a rewarding experience.
Do you have a favorite quote or personal mantra?
"You never know the value of something until it becomes a memory."
Why did you decide to join WH?
I joined WH because it was a unique opportunity to help set up a new audiology clinic at a new hospital, serving the northern community of Singapore. It's an honour to be part of a team dedicated to making a positive impact from the ground up.
What made you stay with us after 3 years?
I've stayed with WH for 3 years because of the supportive and collaborative environment. Working alongside dedicated audiologists, audio technician, ENT specialists, nurses, PSAs and administrative staff who are open to new ideas has made each day enjoyable and rewarding. It is this team spirit that makes WH an exceptional place to work.
