Please tell us more about your current role at Woodlands Health.
I'm a Senior Nurse Clinician at Woodlands Health.
How long have you been a nurse?
I started my nursing career on July 2004, so it's been 20 years.
What made you decide to choose nursing as a profession, and how have those feelings evolved throughout your many years in the profession?
I chose nursing because of the direct involvement in life-saving procedures and the tangible impact on patient outcomes. Over the years, I've come to enjoy the fast-paced and hands-on environment of nursing. My passion lies in providing high-quality care to patients undergoing endoscopic procedures.
How have the roles and job scope of nurses evolved over the decades?
The roles of endoscopy nurses have evolved significantly over the decades. Initially, our main duties were assisting during procedures and providing specialised patient care before, during, and after them.
In recent years, our responsibilities have expanded to include ensuring that reusable flexible endoscopes are cleaned, disinfected, and stored to high standards for future use. We also use advanced methods to track all steps of the endoscopy process, connecting them to equipment, medical staff, and patients to ensure thorough traceability.
What are some other little-known facets of the nursing profession that you wished people knew more about?
Nurses often walk an average of 5 kilometers during a shift - it's a physically demanding profession that helps save money on gym memberships.
What is some advice you would have for those who are thinking of joining the nursing profession?
With so many nursing specialties available, there's likely one that suits you perfectly.
What keeps you going as a nurse?
My passion for healthcare keeps me going.
If there’s anything you’d tell your younger self, what would it be?
You're never too old to learn.
