- Khairul Syazwan, Audiometric Technician at Woodlands Health
How long have you been in your role?
I’ve been in this role as an Audiometric Technician for nearly two years now.
Can you summarise your job in one or two sentences?
As an Audiometric Technician, I conduct hearing tests for adults and support daily operations to ensure the smooth delivery of Audiology services in the clinic.
What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
I’ve always been driven by a deep sense of compassion and the desire to help others. Witnessing the incredible work of healthcare professionals during the Covid pandemic inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare.
What keeps you motivated at work?
What motivates me is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, which fuels my passion for a career in healthcare.
Is there an aspect of your job that you feel is often misunderstood?
One aspect often misunderstood is the complexity and importance of the hearing assessments we conduct.
Many patients see them as simple hearing tests, but in reality, they evaluate multiple facets of hearing health. Through these tests, we can not only detect hearing loss but also determine its type, degree, and configuration.
Could you share a memorable moment from your time in healthcare?
I don’t have one specific favourite moment, but something that continues to stand out is when patients, even after no longer needing my care, stop by the clinic just to say hello. Even though they’re only there for a doctor’s appointment, we often have a short chat where they update me on their hearing health. These moments are memorable because it shows they feel comfortable enough to share that with me, even when they don’t have to — I like to think they see me as a friend in the hospital.
Of course, these connections aren’t just because of me. I play a small part in the patient’s journey. A special shoutout to the Audiologists, ENT Doctors, and PSAs at SOC level 3!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Honestly, what I enjoy most is simply helping people.
Do you have a favourite quote or personal mantra?
"What's comin' will come, and we'll meet it when it does." It’s a reminder to be brave in the face of what lies ahead.
