Meet Angel Tey, a Dietitian at Woodlands Health

How long have you been a dietitian?

I started working as a fresh graduate since June 2021, so this marks my 2nd year of working as a dietitian.

Summarise your job scope in 1-2 sentences.

Dietitians are qualified healthcare professionals who work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to care for the nutritional needs of inpatients, outpatients, and residents in the community. We conduct dietary assessments and provide evidence-based advice or medical nutrition therapy that complements their health conditions to augment medical treatment.

We also support and empower the community with knowledge and skills to make appropriate food choices for better health management.

What drove you to join healthcare?

Having studied food science and technology previously, I wanted to be able to use my knowledge and background in food and nutrition to support an individual’s journey in recovery or management of their medical conditions.

What is one thing that spurs you on at work?

Knowing that each and every one of our efforts is never too small and that they do make a difference.

What is one thing about your job, that you feel is unknown or misunderstood?

We do more than just provide nutrition advice. We are trained in interpreting biochemical results, conducting nutrition-focused physical assessments, and planning enteral or parenteral nutrition regimes to help patients achieve their dietary requirements safely.

At the same time, we are equipped with a variety of tools and techniques, such as counselling skills and food service consultations, that we can utilise to empower clients in adopting healthier lifestyle changes.

Can you share with us one or two memorable moments from your time in WH or healthcare?

One memorable moment for me was having a patient’s family expressed their gratitude to us for our efforts in optimising the patient’s nutritional intake during admission.

What do you love about your job?

Seeing our combined efforts as a multi-disciplinary team pay off, which is reflected in the improvements in patients’ medical conditions.

I also appreciate the increasing awareness that many have on the relationship between nutrition and disease prevention, which motivates me to contribute more.

What is your favourite quote and personal mantra?

Never forget my roots and the reason why I am here today.
