- Nurmaisarah Yusoff, Pharmacy Technician at Woodlands Health

How long have you been in your role?

I've been in my role for nearly five years, and I'll be marking my fourth anniversary this coming July.

Can you summarise what your job entails in a sentence or two?

As a pharmacy technician, I prepare and dispense medications, manage drug inventory, and ensure accurate and safe medication use to support patient care.

What led you to choose a career in healthcare?

I've aspired to work in healthcare since secondary school, driven by my passion for helping others. My interest in pharmacy was inspired by my love for Biology and the fascinating way a small pill can significantly improve someone's health.

What keeps you motivated at work?

While work can be stressful at times, the supportive and friendly workplace culture keeps me motivated and eager to show up each day. I also find great fulfilment in helping others—working in a pharmacy allows me to contribute to the community, even in small but meaningful ways.

What aspect of your job do you think is often misunderstood?

Many people assume that everyone working in a pharmacy is a pharmacist and that the job simply involves handing out medications. However, a pharmacy is a dynamic ecosystem with diverse roles that are vital to its operations and the broader healthcare system.

Pharmacy technicians ensure the accurate preparation and dispensing of medications, while administrative colleagues manage inventory and logistics. Every role, no matter how specialised, is essential in delivering quality care to patients and supporting the smooth functioning of the healthcare system.

Could you share a memorable moment from your time in healthcare?

One of my most unforgettable moments was being part of the Community Treatment Facility (CTF) team in Tampines during the pandemic. I initially felt nervous as it was my first time in such a role, but it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. I'm proud of the teamwork and dedication everyone demonstrated during that challenging time—it’s something I will always hold close to my heart.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to continuously expand my knowledge of pharmacy beyond dispensing medications. From exploring advancements in automation technologies to engaging in lifelong learning and honing my skills, I find every aspect of this journey both exciting and fulfilling.

Do you have a favourite quote or personal mantra?

‘Embrace the challenges, for they are the stepping stones to success.’ This personal mantra reminds me that difficult situations, while tough in the moment, shape my character and enhance my skills, ultimately helping me grow and succeed in the long run.

Why did you decide to join us?

As a recent graduate, I wanted to gain firsthand experience and deepen my understanding of the knowledge I acquired during my diploma. Joining a newly established hospital offered a unique opportunity to be part of a startup environment, providing invaluable experiences that are both challenging and rewarding.

What made you stay with us?

I've stayed with the company because of its strong culture of belonging and collaboration, which makes it feel like a supportive community. The opportunities for growth align with my career aspirations, and the environment fosters both my job satisfaction and overall well-being.
