The Pulmonary Function Lab offers a range of lung function tests to obtain readings of the lung volumes or capacity.
These tests are non-invasive procedures which involve a series of breathing maneuvers through lung testing devices. The Respiratory Care Service team at the Pulmonary Function Lab will guide and coach patients to perform the test with optimal technique. Specific lung function tests will be ordered by the Physician to investigate, diagnose and treat patients accordingly.
A technologist will explain the steps and procedures for each test. Patients are to follow the cues as guided by the technologists in a step-by-step basis. For the lung function tests, the patient will be doing a series of breathing maneuver from the mouth on specific devices. A nose clip will be placed on the nose to keep the nostrils closed. The lung function tests are non-invasive but would require maximal effort by the patient to obtain accurate readings of the lung volumes. For each ordered procedure, the patient will need to repeat the test for a few trials to ensure consistent and accurate results. Do inform the technologists if you feel unwell during the test.
