Intravenous Administration of Medications


This course is designed to equip Registered Nurses (RNs) with the knowledge, skills, and attitude to administer intravenous medications safely and competently.

​

One of the core skills required for a Registered Nurse (RN) is to administer intravenous medications for patients. IVAM is part of care provision to patients who require intravenous medications / therapy in clinical areas.

Before attending the practical sessi​on, it is essential that participants complete the pre-requisite self-directed online modules, which covers the foundational theory. The practical session will build on the knowledge gained from the theory and provide participants with hands-on experience, ensuring they are fully prepared to perform IVAM.

​ This course follows current evidence-based practices and organisational protocols to enhance patient safety and improve clinical outcomes.

​This course is designed to equip Registered Nurses (RNs) with the knowledge, skills, and attitude to administer intravenous medications safely and competently.

It focuses on providing the necessary clinical competency for RNs who have no prior experience with intravenous medication administration, require a refresher or reassessment of their clinical skills, do not currently hold a valid IVAM certificate, and need to incorporate IVAM into their nursing scope of practice.

  1. General concepts (organisation policies and procedural guidelines, nursing perspective, management of complications)

  2. Drug calculations

  3. Pharmacological knowledge of designated intravenous medications

  4. Legal and ethical concepts (accountability of RNs; responsibilities of the RNs during situations where patients develop complications and problems arising from administration of intravenous medications)

  5. Procedure for administration of designated intravenous medications

Upon completion of this course, the learners will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of the institution’s policies and procedures when administering intravenous medications.

  • Apply a standard drug calculation formula to different medication prescriptions accurately and prepare the medications correctly.

  • Apply knowledge of pharmacology when administering intravenous medications.

  • Prevent, recognize and manage complications associated with IVAM.

  • Discuss the legal and ethical implications surrounding current IVAM knowledge, skill and technological advances in administering intravenous medications.

  • Demonstrate competence in administering designated medications intravenously to patients under their care.

External participants are required to submit their job description and a list of assessors from their respective institutions during course registration. This ensures that the assessors meet the minimum requirements, enabling participants to have adequate opportunities for hands-on practice in their own institutions.

On-Job-Training (OJT) will be managed by the participants’ respective organisations. Participants are required to complete the competency checklist, endorsed by their nursing supervisor, within 3 months and submit it to Woodlands Health.
