Experiences from our Doctors

Dr Lily from Myanmar, Senior Resident Physician in Advanced Internal Medicine

"I am proud to share my journey at Woodlands Hospital (WH) as a dedicated professional committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within our workplace.

Since joining WH, I have actively engaged in initiatives that promote a culture of respect and understanding among our diverse staff and patients. My efforts have focused on creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute.

I graduated in Myanmar and worked as a medical officer for 10 years in a private hospital there. After obtaining my MRCP, I decided to explore opportunities in other countries and chose to come to Singapore and join WH. The initial transition was challenging, but my persistent learning and determination allowed me to progress from RP1 to RP2, and then to SRP. Additionally, I have taken on the role of chairperson of the Junior Doctors Committee (JDC), where I strive to support and guide junior colleagues who, like me, come from other countries."

Dr Liu Meng Chuan from Singapore, Senior Resident Physician in the Department of Anaesthesia

"My time at WH has been a transformative and edifying journey so far. In WH, I find a very supportive environment not just in my clinical career but also an excellent work-life balance where I am able to nurture my other interests. I have completed a professional examination in Anaesthesia and a degree in Analytics in my short time here.

I have taken up various roles and responsibilities like producing departmental guidelines, organising rosters, and serving as a member of the Junior Doctors’ Committee (JDC). I am encouraged to move beyond the traditional perception of resident physician as mere ‘service provider’. This meant that I can potentially make a greater impact not only on patient care but also the wellbeing of my fellow colleagues."

Dr Daphne Yen from Singapore, Senior Resident Physician in the Department of Anaesthesia

"Since joining WH as a Resident Physician, my role has expanded beyond clinical responsibilities. I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in setting up new protocols, such as central induction, assisting with roster planning, raising on-the-ground issues, and serving as a bridge between Medical Officers and specialists. Here at WH, my efforts are recognised and valued, reinforcing my sense of purpose and contribution.

For those seeking a fulfilling career in anaesthesia outside of the traditional residency route, WH provides an environment where your skills, experience, and dedication are appreciated. It has given me the space to grow, learn, and make a difference in ways that align with my personal and professional goals."

Dr Chu Kian Wah from Singapore, Senior Hospital Clinician in Rehabilitation Medicine

"I began my journey as a Medical Officer in Singapore in 2016. Over the following years, I was fortunate to have opportunities to rotate through various departments, including Palliative Care, General Medicine, Cardiology, and Rehabilitation. While these experiences were enriching, I found myself gravitating towards departments I was familiar with, essentially staying within my comfort zone.

It was through my former colleague that I discovered the Hospital Clinician Program. This programme offers doctors comprehensive development across five key areas: Clinical Care & Medical Expertise, Leadership & Team Collaboration, Education & Mentorship, Clinical Governance & Safety, and Professionalism & Ethical Practice.

Although the three-year Hospital Clinician rotation has been challenging, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. The knowledge gained and the support received from doctors across different departments have made this journey meaningful and worthwhile."

Dr Tan Xin Yi from Singapore, Hospital Clinician in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine

"After gaining valuable experience at several hospitals early in my career and the COVID pandemic period, transitioning to a new hospital was filled with uncertainty. Joining WH as an ICU hospital clinician has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made.

The Hospital Clinician programme struck a good balance between structure and flexibility, allowing me to learn, share, and collaborate with amazing colleagues from all walks of life. What really drew me here wasn’t just the opportunity to grow — it was the culture. It’s a place where change, diversity, and collaboration are embraced, and there are always opportunities to evolve both personally and professionally.

Adjusting to a new environment wasn’t always easy, but the support from my department and the whole hospital community made all the difference. Even on the toughest days, the purpose I find in my work keeps me grounded and motivated."

Dr Pradeepkumar Theeppainthan from India, Clinical Associate in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

"Working at Woodlands Hospital has been an enriching experience. I am particularly grateful for the warm reception and guidance extended to me during my early days, which made my transition incredibly smooth. I had the valuable opportunity to rotate across various sub-specialties and actively participate in a diverse range of cases. This exposure has been pivotal in expanding my surgical repertoire.

Beyond these clinical milestones, what I value equally are the strong friendships and genuine camaraderie I have cultivated here. These bonds extend well beyond the wards and the operating theatre, transforming the workplace into a vibrant community. "

Dr Patil Satish Shantaram, Senior Resident Physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine

"Working at Woodlands Hospital has been a genuinely positive and rewarding experience for me. From day one, I felt supported by a strong culture of mentorship, open communication, and teamwork. The hospital places real emphasis on structured onboarding, continuous learning, and creating an environment where doctors are encouraged to grow with confidence.

For overseas doctors considering WH, you can expect to work in a modern tertiary hospital with diverse clinical exposure, alongside colleagues who are welcoming, approachable, and supportive. It is a place where people look out for one another, and where high-quality patient care is built on a foundation of mutual respect and trust. "
